I have not included, in the above, other duties in connection with Interim Assessments, Suitors' Fund, Pier Rent, &c. which come in regularly every month. (In regard to Piers, I may mention that when the new Piers Ordinance is passed, the amount of work will be doubled what it was at the beginning of this year).

The balancing of the Rent Roll and Assessment Book is a very onerous duty, and the posting up work is also very heavy and tedious. In the case of Crown Rent, the posting has to be done at the end of a hard day's work fully occupied in writing out receipts, &c. Mr. Lopes gives me assistance in the posting of the Rates Book whenever he can spare time to do so, but he is sufficiently occupied with his onerous duties which leave him with little time to assist me.

I attach Messrs. Tsang's & Lo's statements in regard to their respective duties, from which it will be seen that their work is also very heavy, especially Mr. Tsang's, so it is not reasonable to expect much assistance from these officers.

In these circumstances, I shall be much obliged if you will be so good as to represent these facts to the Honourable Treasurer, and to make such recommendation as you think necessary.
